Abstract

Introduction: Now a day assessing respectful maternal care during child birth is the core component for the improvement of the quality of maternity service and to reduce maternal mortality and morbidity. Giving maternity care without respectful is a violation of human rights and is the main hindering factor preventing skilled birth utilization. Therefore, a need to review literature on interventions that are designed with specific attention towards providing respectful maternity care for women and their successes and challenges.

Objective: This review objective was to determine the estimated pooled prevalence of respectful maternity care during child birth in Ethiopia.

Methods: The systematic review and meta-analysis was carried out in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta- Analyses guideline. The review was included all observational intervention studies, full text articles, and articles written in English language were included in this review. The prevalence of respectful maternity care was calculated by dividing the total number of women who received respectful maternity care during child birth by the total number of pregnant mothers that were included in the study (sample size) and multiplied by one hundred (100). Appropriate data was extracted using a Microsoft Excel spread sheet and exported to STATA version-14 for analysis. Heterogeneity between the included articles was checked by using a heterogeneity χ2 test and I2 test. The selection of relevant studies, data extraction, and quality assessment of individual studies was carried out by two independent authors.

Result: A total of 11 studies with 2944 participants were included in this meta-analysis and the overall estimated pooled prevalence of respectful maternity care reported by the 11 studies was 50.7% (95% CI (39.689%- 61.726)) with significant heterogeneity between studies (????2 =98.5%, = <0.001). The highest estimated RMC prevalence was found in studies conducted in Addis Ababa (56.6%    % (95% CI: 78.571%, 86.229 %), ????2 = 99.3%), followed by studies conducted in Amhara region (55.4% (95% CI:  44.6%, 66.2%) ????2 = 95.7 %).
